A Kitchen Helper and a Hat

Mama’s helper

A hat for a very special two year old friend, info here.

The days have been zipping by. I look back at the past week and all I can see is fog. What did we do? Where did we go? I haven’t the faintest clue.

Lucy has been growing faster than ever. In the blink of an eye she has become such a smart and charismatic little girl. She has quickly become fascinated with helping me in the kitchen. Last week we bought a learning tower, and she and I have been having fun working together. I cook dinner or clean dishes and she plays in a bowl with a little bit of flour, some spoons, and a whisk. We make a great team.

Lucy, 16 Months (almost)

Lucy is about a week away from 16 months now, and I can honestly say that each day gets more and more amazing. She has turned into such a loving little girl. The few moments when she isn’t busy darting around the room, pulling the cat’s tail, or dancing on the coffee table, she spends loving me. I love it. She still likes being in my arms and spends a lot of time in our carrier.  My absolute favorite thing is when she decides to drop what she is doing, run over to me and pucker up, insisting on a kiss. There is nothing in the world sweeter than that.

Lucy is a tiny little thing. She is a skinny, muscular little lady with a giant head (really, it’s been in the 90%+ since she was born). I could blame it on genetics (my family has huge heads), but the truth is she has an enormous brain hiding in there. She is weighing in at 19 pounds and is 30.5” tall. She currently wears a size 5 shoe, but I have already been buying size 6, because if she is anything like her mama (and I suspect she is), then her feet will grow large and they will grow fast. Sorry Lucy, just be happy you have your daddy’s pretty olive skin and not my blotchy complexion.

She is a wild girl. Since the day she was born (and actually even when she was in my belly) I knew she had a lot of energy, more than other kids I have met around her age. This girl is always on the go. Like most parents I see quirks or personality traits and they lead me to wonder who she will become. I know she loves nature and she is a mover. I hope she loves hiking, because I could use a hiking partner. She loves dancing and music, but has absolutely no interest in the television (other than once or twice when I showed her shows about her favorite animals), maybe she will be a musician, I do love music and would love to hear hers! I have offered her crayons and art supplies, but she still tries to eat them, so all my dreams of her following in mama’s footsteps in becoming a painter are still dreams. What will you want to do in your life, my baby girl?

We have had some challenges recently, all teething related. She has 6 teeth on top and 6 on bottom. Her top canines are currently working their way through, and it has been rough. Nights have been restless and the days have been long. I sometimes forget how hard it must be to be a baby and get frustrated with the endless crying. It really takes a lot of work for me to step outside the situation and see why she is acting the way she is, and trying to find some sort of distraction from the pain for her. It must be hard being a baby, I wish I remembered.

Lucy has recently become interested in animal sounds. It all started with this little stuffed cat (which belonged to me when I was young) that meows when you squeeze it’s belly. Lucy started mimicking it, only instead of meow she chants “minow”. Since then we have been teaching her other animal sounds. She will say “boooo” anytime we point to or talk about cows in her books, and she will make the most lovely growling sound every time we get to the three little bears sitting on chairs in Goodnight Moon, which is still her absolute favorite book. She loves bears.

Every day with this crazy, wild, free spirited goofball gets more rewarding. Most days she exhausts me, but every day is a pleasure. I am so thankful that I am this incredible little girl’s mama.

Our Days

I go into so many days thinking I will snap pictures of our entire day. I would love to capture everything we do so that I can tell a story through the photographs. At the end of the day I upload them, and this is precisely what I see, sometimes upward of 300 photos of this sweet girl with a random picture of a tree or an insect in the mix. While I wish I could say (and show) that there were quiet moments of thoughtful reflecting, or some sort of creative venture that I captured on film,  this is our day today–and almost all of our days.

I have the most amazing girl. She fills my days with joy and tears. She makes me laugh and makes me want to pour myself a very stiff drink. She is a true nature girl. She is happiest out of doors, she hugs trees, licks rocks, rolls in sand, and watches animals in fascination. I have a hard time keeping up with her wild spirit, as do many of the children on the playground.

Some days I need to remind myself to appreciate these beautiful but exhausting days.

Lucy’s 1st Birthday Party

It occurred to me a few days ago that I never did make a blog post about Lucy’s birthday party, which was well over a month ago now. It was such a fun affair, we invited about 20 of our closest friends and family to help celebrate our sweet girl’s first year of life. Our tiny home was cramped, but it really was perfect.

I am not wild about cake, and to be frank, I really suck at making it. I do however love pie and am great at making that, so that is what we did. We have not yet introduced sugar to Lucy (and I don’t plan to anytime soon) so I made her a completely natural, sugar free apple berry pie (recipe from the Julian Pie Company, published in this book). Instead of using sugar you add unsweetened apple juice and cook it down, letting the natural flavors shine. As you can see from the pictures above, Lucy adored it and devoured every bite. I also made a blueberry pie and a peach cobbler.

Since we were having pie I decided to loosely go with a picnic theme. I had thought about doing some sort of gourmet peanut butter and jelly sandwich, but decided it would be too much work to try and make a bunch of tiny sandwiches. Instead I settled on egg salad, which I served with sliced bread and crackers. I also made a huge bowl of sun dried tomato hummus, along with pita chips and a vegetable platter. It was a pretty simple fare, which is about all I can do with my busy toddler.

All in all, we had a fun and memorable day, and I am glad it’s over. Birthday number two will be much more low key.

Lucy’s First Birthday

On Friday my dear sweet girl turned one. This post is entirely for her. I hope that someday down the line she will read this and know how much joy she brings to my life.

Dearest Lucy,

What a year this has been. I never in my life knew that I could be so happy, and I definitely never thought that one person could bring me so much joy that I feel giddy–but you do just that. Life before you is now a distant memory, but I do remember always feeling that there was something missing, that was you. When we finally met you for the first time I felt as if I had already known you for years, you just fit so seamlessly into our lives. This is probably not anything you can understand until you have children of your own, but I do hope you can one day understand and feel the immense amounts of joy that I have felt since your arrival.

Though you are only a year, it has been a long time since I thought of you as a baby. Everyone tells me you are an old soul, and I must agree. It isn’t just because you started walking at nine months, and it isn’t because you are a skinny little thing without an ounce of baby chub on you. No, you seem to have a wisdom that many others who encounter you can see in your eyes and sense in your presence. Though you don’t say many actual words yet, you understand so much. Some days the things you know astounds me. There have been many instances where I have said a word that I had no idea that you know, and you will casually point it out or go grab the item. You are so quick to learn, I sometimes worry about keeping up with you and that I am providing you with enough stimulation to keep you going.

To say that I am a proud mama would be an understatement. Lucy, you have taught me so much in the last year, I have learned compassion, patience, and most importantly the meaning of my life. I look forward to every day we have together and am so excited to learn more and more about you with every day that passes. Thank you for being a part of my life.

Love,
Mama

3 Weeks Away

In three very short weeks this sweet girl will be celebrating her first birthday. Where has the time gone? My baby is not such a baby anymore. Sure, her stature is small, but she walks and talks. Maybe they aren’t real distinguishable words, but we seem to communicate pretty well. She almost always knows what I am talking about and about 2/3 of the time I know what she wants or needs. We have a pretty good little thing going here.

One year though, that is big. One year, looking back it all seems like a fog.

Lucy, 10 Months

It’s been a long time since I did an update on Lucy. She recently turned 10 months old. 10 months! I can’t figure out where the time has gone. She is growing so quickly, each day she seems less and less like a baby.

She has been walking for over a month, and recently has started running. She has seven teeth, four on top, three on bottom, and one more on bottom ready to poke through any day. She loves trying new foods but isn’t a very big eater. She is a skinny little thing, at her nine month appointment she was 16 lbs, and I doubt she is much more than that now. She knows a ton of words, and says a few. Throughout our day we go around the house (or wherever we are) and I quiz her on the name of objects and she points them out. Her favorite things are trees, our kitties (or keys as she calls them), and being held. She is very attached to me and wants to be carried about two thirds of our day. She is very energetic but has a very gentle spirit about her. Even when she falls she (usually) does it so gracefully.

It just keeps getting better.

Things.

Umm….hey there.

I have been feeling terribly uninspired when it comes to blogging, though I promise to change that soon. I miss my blogging friends.

I have been reading a ton. I have finished nine books this month alone. NINE. I think that is more than I read all of last year. (By the way, is anyone else on Good Reads?)

Lucy is growing so, so quickly. She will be nine months next week. How did this happen? Nine months is almost a year. My little newborn is almost a toddler. She is just days away from walking, has seven teeth (number seven poked through last night), says mama, dada, key (kitty), and knows many other words. She loves reading, chasing cats, bananas, and exploring. She has a ton of energy and some days I struggle to keep up with her.

Things are good.

Watching Her Grow

Just poking my head in to say hi. It’s been quite a while since my last post, and I could apologize for my lack of presence, but quite honestly I am not sorry.

Lucy has hit this amazing stage where I no longer feel stressed. All I want to do is play, and watch her grow. So many things have happened since she hit 6 months a few weeks back. She sprouted two teeth, she took her first crawling step, she can sit up from laying down, she can pull herself up to standing, and most importantly, she said mama.

I am in heaven, and trying to savor every moment. I probably will not be back until after the Thanksgiving holiday, so I wish you all a good one.
