Mint, Lavender, and Tomatoes

A lot of my recent days seem to be caught in daydreams. I have a habit of thinking of something and then spending hours researching it online and figuring out what I would do with it, or how I could shape my life around it, or how it would fit in to the grand schemes of silly ideas I have.

Recently I have been thinking about school. I have been going on and off for the past three years to the local community college taking art classes and general ed. I am pretty close to being able to get my associates degree, which would be nice to have, but then where would I go from there? Bachelor degree? What would I do with that? I have no real intentions to work outside the home, and I hate the idea of going into debt for my education. I sort of like the idea of going to the community college forever, and don’t feel I need a degree to better my life (at least at this point). This drives my dad mad of course, but hey, it is my life.

Anyhow, on to what I have been reading up on lately–nursery technologies! They offer all sorts of horticulture certificate programs at a neighboring community college. I have been so fascinated lately with growing things, and actually looked into the programs a few years back. I have talked to Russ about it a lot too, and he likes the idea. If all I ever do with the knowledge I gain from the classes is for my own personal use, either now on my little balcony, or in the future when we have enough land to do some serious plant/vegetable growing, then I will be happy.

Besides reading up on different horticulture classes that the school offers, this weekend I have planted a few things. Friday I bought three different kinds of mint (I could not find mint seeds anywhere this year!), chocolate mint, spearmint, and pineapple mint. I had never tasted the chocolate or pineapple mint, but both were delicious. Russ and I agreed that the chocolate mint was our favorite of the three. Yesterday we also transplanted some tomato plants that my neighbor was growing in a pot into a small plot of land on the side of our complex.

On Friday when I bought the mint I also bought some lovely lavender, which I re-potted that afternoon. Before I had done much research on lavender I had purchased a packet of lavender seeds at the market, and tried several times to get some lavender started. I later found out through my gardening books that lavender is extremely difficult to germinate. I decided to buy a small lavender plant at the garden store, though I still really want to succeed in starting lavender from seeds….just for my own stupid self satisfaction.

I hand washed my work gloves after planting the tomatoes and left them to dry on our fence. It was unintentional but it sort of looks like the left glove is flipping us the bird. Sorry, I promise it wasn’t on purpose!

While we were working on replanting the tomatoes I had two loaves of bread rising. The recipe I followed was a new on. I have had a bit of bad bread luck recently, but these loaves turned out beautifully.

Rain Gutter Garden

I am surprised I have the energy to get a post up tonight. If it hadn’t been almost a week since my last post I probably would have put it off another day.

Today Russ and I finally got our balcony garden put together. We intended to do it last weekend, but Russ was terribly sick, so we had to wait. We were outside for 5 or 6 hours today working on hanging the rain gutters up, mixing soil and compost, repotting plants, cleaning, and finally sitting back and relaxing while admiring our job well done. Russ did all the hard work–getting the gutters up. They turned out to be a bit more hassle than intended because we accidentally bought the wrong screws, then while putting them up also realized we didn’t have a short screwdriver. Luckily there is a hardware store less than a mile from our house, so we didn’t have to go back to the Home Depot, which is always a hassle. Despite a few setbacks, it feels great to finally have them up.

We are both feeling quite pooped after all the work. Right now I am drinking a glass of wine, but as soon as I put this post up and finish my drink I am heading to the bed to read and fall asleep early.

Here is a close up of my favorite herb of the moment….thyme. I can’t wait for it to get big enough to start using, I just love thyme with vegetables.

Balcony Garden

Since we moved into our apartment two months ago, I have had this dream in my head of using all of our outside space to grow vegetables and herbs (and hopefully have enough room for two chairs and a mini table). Up until this weekend I had not made any official decisions as to how I was going to accomplish this or what I was planning on growing. A few days ago my friend Donna from The Apron Revolution shared this picture she found online with me. Isn’t it a clever idea? I would never have thought to use rain gutters to grow veggies in. For someone like me, with a space about 4 x 10 feet, this is a perfect solution to get the most out of my space, and still look good. Not only are they in rows attached to the wall, but there could potentially be potted plants lining the wall below them, as well as enough space left over to sit or stand on our balcony!

Yesterday Russ and I went to the hardware store with the intention of getting our new mini vegetable garden started. We planned on purchasing rain gutters, seeds, and potting soil. It wasn’t until I actually walked down the roofing isle that it even donned on me that we can’t fit ten foot rain gutters in our tiny car! This should have occurred to me hours earlier when I looked them up online–not only to price, but also to find out the length. Oh, a day in my life.

We did spend a considerable amount of time in the garden section of the store, while I carefully picked out the different herbs and vegetables I plan to grow, and wandered the nursery for my own enjoyment.

This morning we got up and sat out on the balcony for an hour or so, scooping soil into Dixie cups and planting seeds. In the end I decided on two types of tomatoes (cherry, and a larger hybrid tomato), two types of lettuce (bibb, and another which I can’t think of off the top of my head, and had never heard of before), carrots (not going into the rain gutter planter, obviously), bell peppers, oregano, rosemary, thyme and chives.

These are only about half of what we planted today. If you notice in the picture there are a few sprouts. I did start some basil about two weeks ago, which are coming up nicely.

Hopefully one day this week we can borrow my dad’s truck and get down to the Home Depot to pick up the rain gutters. I would love to get these put up next weekend.
