Memorial Day

Over the weekend I learned that my brother was offered a really great teaching job near Santa Barbara, California. While it will be about a four hour drive to go visit–I’ll take it! I am so excited that I will be able to go see him and his wonderful wife for weekend visits. The area they are moving to this August is absolutely beautiful, or so I have been told through my brother and his photos. It is a farming school, and because he has been getting into cheese making (he was the one that suggested I try the 30 minute mozzarella I made last week), they want to get a dairy cow and start to incorporate cheese making into the curriculum. They also sent my brother home from the interview with tons of freshly grown artichokes. Sounds like my kind of place, I can’t wait to visit! It really will be nice to have more of my family close by.

Speaking of family yesterday we went down to Russ’ grandparents house for a Memorial Day barbecue. Over the years I have come to be known in the family as the pie maker, which means I am busy in front of the oven on any given holiday. Yesterday was no different. There were 16 people attending, so I made three pies. I made apple (with the dome top), lemon meringue, and peach (with the lattice top). The lemon meringue surprised me and was the most popular pie. Little did they know that I totally burnt the meringue the first time around and had to scrape it off and start again (notice the extra dark crust!!).

I almost forgot to take a picture, but I ran out front with Russ and made him snap a picture of my outfit.

Blogger Meet Up

Today was a nice day out. I got to meet up with one of my favorite vintage bloggers, Solanah of Vixen Vintage, who is down in Southern California on vacation. We tried getting together on her last visit to San Diego a few months back, but things didn’t quite work out. This time though we planned it out a bit further in advance, so we were able to have a play date. Let me just say, she is even cuter in person, and oh so sweet. She told me all about Portland estate sales and vintage shopping in the area. I tend to get incredibly nervous when I meet people for the first time, and when I get nervous I blab a lot about silly things. I sure hope I didn’t talk her ear off!!

We met at a local coffee shop and chatted for a bit, then walked down to Frock You Vintage. We spent the majority of our time browsing their incredible selection of clothes, trying on hats, and talking with the guy who was working. I absolutely love this store, and really need to go in more often, especially since it is only a ten minute walk from my apartment.

From there we headed down the street to another vintage shop, which apparently had up and moved without my consent. Rude. We did however get to check out a new little shop in the area called Fables, the clothes are all vintage and sailor inspired.

It was a fun day, and I am so glad we were finally able to meet. I am really hoping I can arrange a trip up to Portland later this year (my brother and his wife moved there earlier this year), and do some vintage shopping with Solanah there.

*Edited to add: Here is a link to Solanah’s post with even more pictures from our day. Thanks to her for sharing her pictures, I never even took my camera out of my purse!

Queens of Vintage

Short post today, as I have a lot of catching up to do from my weekend. I just wanted to tell you all how excited I am to be named a Queen of Vintage!

Knit Snuggie

Yesterday my sister and I got together for lunch, during which we decided to spend the afternoon crafting.  I have been wanting to make some knit or crocheted dishcloths for my kitchen, so we went to the fabric store to buy yarn and needles. When I worked for Michael’s eight or so years ago I dabbled in many different crafts, including knitting and crocheting. I never really followed through with either, having only made practice squares or random projects that I never got close to finishing. I never really thought I would get into knitting or crocheting again (I think at this point I prefer knitting), but I am really enjoying it. It is kind of relaxing to do right before bed.

This is what I wore yesterday. The coat is newly thrifted, for only $7!

This is the first dishcloth I am making. It is about half done now, and while it isn’t perfect, I still plan on finishing it–and using it!

While we were at the fabric store I was looking through the free patterns they offered. I had to take this one, because it really made me laugh out loud.

A knit snuggie?!

New Beehive Hat

This isn’t actually something I wore yesterday, though if I had made plans to get out of the house, I would have loved to wear it out! I really just threw on the dress so I could model the hat I got at an estate sale almost two weeks ago. I absolutely love this style of hat, and was thrilled to find it. I honestly have been scouring both etsy and eBay for months looking for this exact hat! The estate sale we went to had a pretty good selection of vintage hats, most of which I liked, but when I saw this one, I grabbed it, and wouldn’t let it go! Finding a hat that I have been hunting for months for, and having it actually fit my gigantic head, was such a nice way to start my weekend.

I have so many dresses like this one, that I never get an opportunity to share, because I almost always wear it to an evening or nighttime event. I love cocktail dresses, and it seems that it is all I find when I go thrifting. I am not complaining, because I love having tons of cocktail dresses, but it would be nice to start finding some daytime looks to wear as well.

Anyway, it is rainy and grey here today, but I have another outfit post to share tomorrow. Two outfit posts in two days–must be a record for me!

A Walk in the Park

Why hello there blog, long time no update! I have not forgotten you, I promise. I have just been enjoying the incredible Spring weather we have been having. Last week I went with my girl friend Alison to Balboa Park to take pictures. It was 80 degrees out, and absolutely beautiful.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Daily Outfit

I haven’t really had many opportunities lately to put on a decent outfit because of all the moving. Today however I had to go down to the mall and look for a gift for someone. I hate going out in public looking like I do when I am working on things around the house, so I spiffed myself up. All this meant was combing my hair and throwing on a nicer dress. I bought this one about two weeks ago, when we were staying at Russ’ parents house and still unsure when we would be able to move into the new apartment.

I tried this new way of styling my hair yesterday. All I did was use the flat iron to straighten and bump under the ends of my hair. The nice thing about the flat iron is it lasts really well overnight, and I only have minor touch ups to do. Yesterday I wasn’t sure what I thought of the style, thinking it was a bit too straight for me, but it is really starting to grow on me.

Dress & Shoes: Thrifted

Ever since my computer got that virus last month and we got it repaired, I haven’t been able to crop/edit my photos. I still need to find my Photoshop disc and reinstall it on the computer. I may be a bit late to the party, but I just yesterday discovered Picnik. Though it is pretty limited (unless you want to upgrade), it is a pretty nice online photo editor, and has some fun features that I was messing around with on this photo (I gave this the 1960’s effect).

New Haircut

This week I had my aunt, who used to work as a stylist, cut my hair. I had Russ trim it for me about a month ago, but hadn’t gotten a real cut in ages. I wanted a little Betty Draper do, and am quite happy with the results. It is so nice to finally have my hair do what I want without excessive product and coaxing.

I have been doing the headband thing quite a bit lately. I am in the process of growing my bangs out, and am so, so anxious for them to grow.

This was my outfit yesterday.

I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend!

Christmas Cards

Happy Sunday! I hope everyone is staying nice and warm through the cold weather.

This morning Russ and I got dressed up and took some photos to send out in our Christmas cards. It was just a spur of the moment thought to add the martinis (water and olives!), but we ended up liking the photos with the drinks better than the ones without.

The rest of today I will be working like crazy to get my final presentation done for my English class tomorrow. I have so much work to get caught up on, and tons of fun estate sale finds to share. After tomorrow’s presentation I will regain my freedom, and finally make a more well thought out blog post!

Busy, Busy, Busy

Well I certainly have been a bad blogger lately!

Between Thanksgiving and the final research project I am working on for my class, I have had little time to myself. I can’t even remember the last time I sat down and was able to check my Google reader and get caught up on the blog world! After next Monday I will be able to catch up on all the things I have been neglecting, including finishing the dress I have been working on for at least two weeks now!

Anyway, this is what I wore to class today. I bought this dress about three years ago at a thrift store. It was in pristine condition and looked as if it had never been worn.
