Our Homeostasis

I want you all to meet two of the most wonderful people in my life.

This is my brother Roderick, but we call him Roddy. He’s a cheese making goofball who loves rocks and fossils. He and I can talk about food until the sun comes up.

This is his beautiful wife Kyle. She is a fun loving exercise enthusiast whose kind hearted demeanor is enviable. She is incredibly creative and always has fun activities planned.

Together they are currently residing in Portland Oregon, though at the end of the Summer are moving down to Los Olivos California where my brother has been offered a teaching position at a school. They are very active, love going on backpacking adventures, and are always exploring local spots. They cook together and love exploring new and interesting vegetables from the farmer’s market.

Anyhow, the reason I am introducing them to you is because they recently started a blog called Our Homeostasis, which they both write for. It is only a few weeks old, but I have been actively reading, and anxiously waiting more posts and more of their beautiful photography. My brother who was the one who got me interested in making my own mozzarella (and hopefully other cheeses in the future) has already shared a few of his cheeses.

Boiled peanuts and berry muffins.

A cheddar cheese Roddy made.

So go check out their blog, Our Homeostasis, subscribe, and leave lots of comments! Don’t forget to tell them I sent you!

R.I.P. Mildred

So sorry about not posting in over a week. I had planned on posting on Monday–as we were up in LA over the weekend, and I wanted to write about the trip up. Unfortunately while we were there we got a call that my husband’s grandmother, Mildred, who lives in Hawaii had passed away.

I was fortunate enough to get to meet her back in 2004 when we flew to Hawaii to celebrate her 90th birthday. She was a lovely and fun loving lady, who we had a blast playing dominoes and drinking martinis with for two weeks. She will be greatly missed by many.

Oddly enough when we got the call we had just come from an incredible Tiki/Polynesian restaurant called the Bahooka. If you haven’t been here and you live or plan on visiting Southern California soon, do check it out. This place was unbelievable. The building was 10,000 square feet and filled with aquariums and South Pacific decor, much which was taken from old ship wreckage. Oh yeah—and the drinks were amazing! We weren’t  there for dinner, but we did split two orders of french fries with our friends. We really just wanted some tropical drinks and to check out the Bahooka, which we found out is where they shot a scene from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

This was the view from our table. The bar in the other room was actually one long fish tank!

A Long Weekend

Hello all! I sure do apologize for the lack of posts. I had hoped to update on Sunday, but after my crazy weekend I had absolutely no energy to do so.

The catering adventure went very well. I worked non stop for three days straight, with help from two amazing friends and one amazing husband to get this vegan wedding together. The food turned out better than I could have ever imagined, and now it all seems like one big blur–I don’t know how we did it! On the menu was lasagna, green beans with cashew yogurt sauce, rice salad, green salad with an almond agave dressing as well as a red bell pepper balsamic vinaigrette. Along with that we had a fruit salad with yogurt dressing and baguettes with sun dried tomato butter. Despite the severe lack of sleep, and feeling like I was going to faint for half the day of the wedding, everything went smoothly.

Unfortunately with all the running around it didn’t even cross my mind to snap an outfit photo. Instead of my own outfit photos, I thought I would share some vintage photographs from my collection.
