Revlon Matte

I have been on a bit of a spending spree lately, and I have absolutely no regrets! Since I don’t have a regular job I seldom go on shopping binges, unless it involves food. Since getting paid for the catering job I did a few weeks ago I was debating what to do with the money. I knew I wanted to put some of it into savings, but I couldn’t decide if I should buy myself a really expensive nice piece or many small accessories.

After much consideration, and looking through my favorites list on Etsy, I decided many small things I have been coveting is the better route at this time. Many things I did buy. Most of it vintage accessories online, but I did also purchase a lot of much needed beauty products.

Though I did have extra spending money this month, it was still very limited. No trips to Sephora for me. Instead I hit up the drug store and was pleased as pie to find that the Revlon Matte lipsticks were buy one get one free. I had been wanting to try them for some time. Of course I bought Really Red, which I adore. I also bought the color Wine Not, which I love, but still have yet to work up the courage to wear in public for fear of looking too gothic! The colors are so nice, leave your lips feeling moisturized and soft, and at only $8 a tube it is much more affordable than my preferred brand, NARS ($24 a tube!). Now I am just wishing there was a bigger market for Matte lipsticks, because I would love for them to come out with more colors (I think there are only about eight currently).

This is hardly scratching the surface of my spending spree, but I am just so pleased with the Revlon Matte series I had to make a post all about them. Next post I will share all my amazing etsy purchases!

Beauty Day

Yesterday after a long workout in the gym, my girlfriend Alison and I walked back to my house and decided to treat ourselves to a spa day. It was complete with facials, hair, nails, and most importantly–mimosas! Sitting around I thought we needed to take a few photos. It was actually a complete accident that they turned out black and white, but it seems quite suiting.

The Side Sweep and Glamour Bob

A few years back I found what is probably one of my favorite books in my collection. It is Family Circle’s Guide to Beauty, published in 1964. I have done many of the styles on my own hair, an have actually learned some great tips while browsing the 192 pages of joy in this book.

I just love the style of the early 60’s. Makeup, hair, and clothes were all about glamour and drama. While I like to go all out when I am getting dressed, many of the early 60’s styles would be so easy to incorporate into a modern woman’s wardrobe. Here are two scans I love from the book. The first is called the side sweep, and the second is the glamour bob.

Light My Tiki

The sweltering heat in San Diego has been kicking my behind lately. I went for a quick walk down to the Beauty Supply Warehouse and passed by a public thermometer that read 96 degrees. I shouldn’t be complaining though, my poor husband works out in East County where yesterday it was 109 degrees, and today is supposed to be hotter! The poor guy, he is a locksmith, and has to go in and out all day working on car locks.

I was crazy enough to head outdoors (rather than melt into my couch in front of a fan),  because I wanted to pick up a bonnet dryer attachment and some rollers. I have been using hot rollers on my hair for years, but only because they were what I had on hand. I learned to set hair the old fashioned way, while going to beauty school, and already know the results are not even comparable. Wet sets just last so much longer. So now I am all set to do wet sets on my hair, well when the temperature cools a bit!

While we are on the subject of beauty supplies, I found the most incredible nail polish color yesterday by China Glaze. The color is called “Light My Tiki”. The name is quite appropriate, it is the perfect tropical color. It is the kind of color you wear on an a small island in the South Pacific with a lei around your neck while sipping on mai tais surrounded by birds of paradise.  It is much more pink than the picture shows. I bought the color at Sally Beauty Supply. The site says $4.99, but I bought it in the store for $2.99, though I do have a Sally card.

If you have a few minutes to spare I suggest watching this video. The clothes, makeup, everything is fantabulous!
