If there is one thing that always makes me sad about summer’s farewell, it is the tomatoes. Not just any tomatoes, heirloom tomatoes. Big red lumpy ones, with many pockets of seeds. Little tiny multi colored ones that burst in your mouth. Striped green ones, that add color to tarts, pizzas, and salads. Round yellow ones so sweet they taste like candy. I can’t get enough of them.
I grew the two monsters above. We didn’t get many (and a few got attacked by those pesky horn worms!), but that doesn’t even bother me. The flavor is so far superior to any that you could get in a store. We may get a few more over the next few weeks, but they are pretty much done. Farewell heirlooms, you will be in my thoughts until next summer.
