A Weekend of Reading

The last four days I have had various blog post ideas running through my mind. While walking Lucy around, trying to coax her into sleep, I think about all that I want to blog about. I seem to be in a real writing mood lately, but hardly can find the time to sit down and do it. Now I have Lucy down for a nap but can’t really figure out where to begin, or what to write. Instead of some planned out post, I will share my weekend.

It has been relaxing. Friday I checked a bunch of books out from the library and have been able to do a lot of reading. One of the books I checked out was Dr. Sears’ The Baby Sleep Book. Yesterday while Russ played with Lucy I was able to read the chapter on napping. There were some really useful tips that I later put into use. I actually managed to get Lucy down for a three hour nap, which must be some sort of record around these parts. I laid beside her for about half of that time and started reading Nina Planck’s book, Real Foods: What to Eat and Why. I am only 100 or so pages into it, but I already highly recommend reading it. It is packed so full of information on the effects that our industrialized food system has on our bodies and the benefits of consuming things like raw milk and fresh and locally grown meat and produce. It really is a page turner.

The remainder of our weekend has been spent playing with Lucy and enjoying the nice cool (well, cool for August in San Diego) weather. Last night Russ and I were able to enjoy a meal together for the first time since I can remember. It ended up being around 8:30 PM, but it was so nice to be able to eat and have a conversation that wasn’t about getting Lucy to bed. It has been a really great weekend, I hope yours was as well.

I am so happy to hear that Lucy has been sleeping a bit more these past couple days! You need some down time :)

    Miss you!

  2. I’ve really been wanting to read the Dr. Sear’s book!
I read the “Baby Whisperer” one, and it really helped with Lillian sleeping and getting into a steady routine! It’s called E-A-S-Y. (eat, activity, sleep, you-time)
    I love it.
    Best of luck!
    And adorable baby!

Hello, I am a big Sears fan I have to say. The book titles can be a bit misleading I find though. I read the fussy baby book expecting a book to be all about, well, fussy babies lol, but it was so much more than that.
I identify with their parenting style and I guess that’s what it all boils down to. We probably know the type of parent we want to be, even if we aren’t 100% sure how to implement it.
I haven’t read the other book you mentioned. Is it nutrition for babies or all of the family?

It is actually about the food our entire society eats and how most of it is genetically engineered. She talks a lot about the whole low fat/non fat movement, and how damaging eating that way is on our systems. She does touch on the benefits of breastfeeding, and the nutrition women need in order to ensure their baby gets all the vitamins he/she needs. It is really fascinating, though a bit disheartening because the number of alternative ‘real foods’ (other than just organic fruits and veggies) are very limited/expensive.

Glad to hear you’ve discovered Nina Planck! I read “Real Food for Mother and Baby” pretty much the moment I found out I was pregnant. And I’ve been referencing it throughout the pregnancy. I plan to use some of her baby food ideas (first foods) after delivery and EBF for at least the first 6 months. I highly recommend that one, I think you’d enjoy it. Cheers!

Thanks Winni, I will definitely pick that one up as soon as I finish reading Real Food.
